Chengdu DIY trip planner 成都

A food-led Sichuan capital connecting giant-panda conservation, Three Kingdoms memory, Tang poetry and Ancient Shu archaeology.

Chengdu's signature sights are not one compact loop. The Panda Base sits north of the center, Wuhou Shrine and Du Fu Thatched Cottage anchor different urban heritage districts, and Sanxingdui is a separate museum excursion in Guanghan. A good first visit protects those choices while leaving room for Sichuan food and neighborhood life.

01 / Character

What Chengdu adds to a China trip.

Choose it for

  • giant-panda conservation
  • Sichuan food
  • Ancient Shu archaeology
  • Three Kingdoms history
  • poetry and garden museums

It may not suit you if

  • travelers expecting every signature sight in one compact center
  • visitors unwilling to reserve major attractions or research a separate Sanxingdui transfer

City traits

  • food-led city
  • two-airport gateway
  • spread-out signature sights
  • reservation-heavy anchors
  • strong regional-trip base
02 / Time in the city

How many days do you need in Chengdu?

Choose Chengdu for a slower, food-led city with a rare mix of panda conservation and deep Sichuan history; three nights is the useful first-visit balance because Sanxingdui is outside the urban core and should not be squeezed between city sights.

Pandas and urban heritage2 nights
What fits
The Panda Base, Wuhou Shrine and Du Fu Thatched Cottage as three separate sightseeing blocks.
The tradeoff
Sanxingdui is excluded: adding a Guanghan museum excursion would remove the margin for city transfers, queues and unplanned food or neighborhood time.
Balanced Chengdu and Ancient Shu3 nights
What fits
All four first-visit priorities, with Sanxingdui protected as a separate Guanghan block rather than attached to a central-city day.
The tradeoff
Three nights covers the evidence-led anchors but still requires restraint: teahouses, food neighborhoods and other Chengdu museums compete for the remaining unscheduled time.
Chengdu with regional depth5 nights
What fits
The complete first-visit set at a slower pace, with room to absorb Chengdu's food and street life and to research an additional regional outing.
The tradeoff
Five nights rewards depth rather than a larger checklist; Dujiangyan, Leshan or other regional choices still need their own current transport and admission research.

These bands are editorial planning choices, not fixed itineraries. They use the reviewed sights below and a conservative six-hour sightseeing guide; opening days, timed entry, queues and local transfers still need checking.

03 / First-visit shape

A realistic first Chengdu trip.

Use these as priority groups rather than a clock-by-clock schedule. Keep room for the city itself instead of treating all four sights as a checklist.

  1. 01

    Panda conservation campus

Treat the Panda Base as a substantial conservation and public-education site, not a single enclosure or quick photo stop.

Keep honest Animal visibility and open areas vary; reserve through the current official channel and let welfare notices shape the visit.

  2. 02

    Three Kingdoms and Tang poetry

Use Wuhou Shrine for Chengdu's Shu-Han memory and Du Fu Thatched Cottage for the poet's Chengdu years and later memorial landscape.

Keep honest They are separate museum districts with independent ticket and opening notices; the pairing is thematic, not a promised timetable.

  3. 03

    Ancient Shu in Guanghan

Give Sanxingdui's archaeological collections their own museum block to understand an Ancient Shu world that predates the later city narratives.

Keep honest Sanxingdui Museum is in Guanghan, outside central Chengdu; reserve first and research the current outbound and return transport without assuming a duration.

Before fixing the day order

What should you reserve or verify first?

  1. Reserve the Panda Base through an official channel

The Base currently requires advance real-name booking for ordinary admission. Recheck its official ticket page for the visit date and bring the accepted original identity document.

  2. Secure Sanxingdui before planning the transfer

Use the museum's official website or official account for current real-name admission, then research the separate Guanghan journey; no Chengdu–museum travel time is stored here.

  3. Check both urban museum notices

Wuhou Shrine and Du Fu Thatched Cottage publish their own ticket and opening information. Verify each separately instead of assuming one city-museum rule applies to both.

04 / Signature experiences

Four places that explain Chengdu.

Use these as planning anchors, not as a checklist to rush through in one day.

Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding

    成都大熊猫繁育研究基地
    Chenghua District, north Chengdu

A large conservation, research and public-education campus makes the panda visit about habitat, animal care and science rather than one viewing enclosure.

The official ticket page requires advance real-name booking for ordinary admission. Check current welfare closures and visitor notices, and never treat a specific animal sighting as guaranteed.

    Chengdu Wuhou Shrine Museum

    成都武侯祠博物馆
    Wuhou District

The combined memorial complex for Liu Bei, Zhuge Liang and other Shu-Han figures gives Chengdu's Three Kingdoms history a physical setting of halls, tomb and later commemoration.

Use the museum's current ticket notice for its historical-relic area. The wider museum grounds and adjacent Jinli folk district should not be collapsed into one quick stop.

    Du Fu Thatched Cottage Museum

    成都杜甫草堂博物馆
    Qingyang District

Memorial halls, reconstructed cottage, Tang-period remains and gardens connect Du Fu's years in Chengdu with the long history of preserving his poetry and residence.

This is a layered memorial landscape rather than an intact Tang house. Check the museum's current opening and ticket notice before pairing it with another west-side sight.

    Sanxingdui Museum

    三星堆博物馆
    Guanghan, Deyang

The site museum's bronzes, gold, jade and archaeological interpretation reveal a distinctive Ancient Shu civilization that radically expands a Chengdu-region history trip.

The museum is in Guanghan, not central Chengdu. Use its current official real-name admission channel first, then research outbound and return transport separately; no transfer duration is asserted here.

05 / Where to stay

Choose a base, not a hotel.

These are editorial base choices inferred from Chengdu's official visitor-area and museum evidence, not hotel rankings or booking results. The Panda Base and Sanxingdui remain deliberate outward journeys from every central base, so choose the urban neighborhood you want to return to rather than claiming proximity to every signature sight.

Area guidance, not a hotel ranking. These editorial suggestions use reviewed sights and transport anchors. They do not compare individual hotels, live availability, prices or door-to-door journey time.

Choosing a base will add Chengdu to your trip without removing another city.

Base 01

Chunxi Road & Daci Temple Area 春熙路与大慈寺片区

The editorial case is an active east-central base: official city guidance identifies the Chunxi Road side of the inner city with shopping, restaurants, night activity, walkable commercial streets and metro access.

Works well for
First visits, food and evening activity, travelers who value a lively central return point, and trips balancing several different city districts.

Watch forNone of the four catalog sights is beside this base. Wuhou Shrine and Du Fu Thatched Cottage need separate urban trips, while the Panda Base and Sanxingdui are longer outward commitments.

Base 02

Wuhou Shrine & Jinli 武侯祠与锦里

The editorial case is direct access to Chengdu's Three Kingdoms layer and the surrounding southwest inner-city district, with Wuhou Shrine's memorial complex and Jinli folk area anchoring the neighborhood.

Works well for
Wuhou Shrine, Three Kingdoms history, evening street activity, and travelers who prefer a heritage-led base over a commercial-center base.
Sight-planning anchors
Chengdu Wuhou Shrine Museum

Watch forJinli is a busy visitor district, and this base does not remove transfers to Du Fu Thatched Cottage, the Panda Base, either airport, Chengdu East or Sanxingdui.

Base 03

Huanhua Stream & Du Fu Thatched Cottage 浣花溪与杜甫草堂

The editorial case is Chengdu's quieter west-side cultural landscape: Du Fu Thatched Cottage's memorial halls, reconstructed cottage, archaeological remains and gardens anchor the Huanhua area.

Works well for
Du Fu Thatched Cottage, poetry and gardens, slower mornings, repeat visitors, and travelers who prefer a lower-intensity cultural district.
Sight-planning anchors
Du Fu Thatched Cottage Museum

Watch forThis is not the most convenient choice for late commercial activity or eastern and northern sights. Wuhou Shrine, the Panda Base, Chengdu East, both airports and Sanxingdui all require separate transfers.

  • Chengdu Shuangliu International AirportCTU
    Airport · Regional gateway

One of Chengdu's two airports. Confirm CTU and the operating terminal before travel; a connection involving TFU is a separate cross-airport transfer.

  • Chengdu East Railway Station成都东

Foods that belong here

  • Mapo tofu 麻婆豆腐

Soft tofu in a chile-bean, fermented-bean and Sichuan-pepper sauce; the classic balance is savory, hot and numbing rather than simply fiery.

  • Chengdu hot pot 成都火锅

A shared meal built around a seasoned simmering broth and ingredients cooked in rounds; confirm broth intensity and any dietary restrictions before ordering.

  • Dan dan noodles 担担面

A small bowl of noodles with a concentrated savory, spicy and nutty seasoning, useful as one stop in a broader snack tasting.

  • Zhong dumplings 钟水饺

Tender pork dumplings served with sweetened aromatic soy, chile oil and garlic in a characteristic Chengdu snack style.
