More pandas, but a lot of walking
After visiting both the Research Base and Panda Valley in September 2025, one traveler preferred the Research Base for its scale and number of pandas. Exploring it meant a lot of walking; fewer visitors at Panda Valley did not necessarily mean less crowding around each visible panda. Read the original Reddit post.
Remarkable objects, harder-to-read interpretation
A self-described archaeologist visiting Sanxingdui in 2024 was impressed by the quantity and quality of the artifacts. Choose the Panda Base for more than a photograph
The Panda Base combines animal enclosures with conservation research and public education. Our take: choose it for an interest in pandas and the work around them, not simply because a panda photograph is on a Chengdu checklist.

Judge Sanxingdui as an archaeology destination
Sanxingdui's Ancient Shu collection is in Guanghan, outside central Chengdu. Our take: judge the museum as an archaeology destination in its own right, rather than assuming it is a quick extra between city sights.

Separate Wuhou's historical focus from Jinli
The Wuhou museum separates the Three Kingdoms historic precinct from its Jinli folk-culture area. Our take: choose the memorial halls for Shu Han history and judge the neighbouring street experience separately.
