A memorable sunrise, with a tiring descent
On a 2024 visit, one traveler went from thick fog to a sunrise above the clouds that made Huangshan worthwhile for them. The long descent on paved steps was much less rewarding: parts had limited views, and their legs hurt for several days afterward. Read the original Reddit post.
The mountain impressed more than Hongcun
Replying to a planning question, a winter visitor loved Huangshan's scenery and felt it justified the effort of reaching the mountain. They also found Hongcun beautiful and worth visiting, though less spectacular than Huangshan itself. Read the original Reddit post.

Xidi changed character between night and morning

Huangshan's granite peaks and ancient pines are often seen through cloud and mist. Our take: it suits travelers who value mountain scenery even when visibility changes; a particular sunrise or clear summit panorama should not be treated as guaranteed.

Hongcun's water system connects its lanes and houses with Moon Pond and South Lake. Our take: look at how the village fits together, rather than judging it only by the most familiar pond photograph.
