Choose it for
- Travelers who want imperial garden design, lake-and-hill views and long landscape sequences.
- A balanced first Beijing visit after the Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven and Great Wall priorities are protected.
- People who prefer a slower outdoor historic site to another dense museum or palace interior.
Know the tradeoffs
- It is a large landscape garden, not a compact palace stop, and route choice determines what you actually see.
- Several internal sights can have access arrangements different from general park entry.
- Its northwest location makes it a poor same-day partner for Mutianyu or a fixed Forbidden City visit.

Area and base implication
Do not choose a Beijing hotel area solely for this sight. The official guide places it in Haidian's western suburbs and documents several gate approaches; keep the base that best serves the whole city plan and treat the palace as a dedicated northwest block. None of the three current Beijing area options removes that planning step.
