Beijing 北京
China's imperial and political capital, with monumental axial planning, courtyard neighborhoods and Great Wall access.
Beijing needs more time than its map suggests. The Forbidden City and central axis form one demanding day, the Great Wall another, while the Temple of Heaven, Summer Palace, hutongs and museums compete for the remaining time.
What Beijing adds to a China trip.
Choose it for
- first-time China history
- imperial architecture
- major museums
- Great Wall trips
- northern food
It may not suit you if
- one-night stopovers
- travelers who want every major sight within one compact district
City traits
- monumental scale
- reservation-heavy
- long transfer times
- excellent metro
- four-season destination
Four places that explain Beijing.
Use these as planning anchors, not as a checklist to rush through in one day.
- 01Dongcheng, central axis
Forbidden City / Palace Museum
故宫博物院The palace sequence, courtyards and collection provide the clearest spatial account of Ming and Qing imperial government.
Current official rules use timed, real-name booking and a south-to-north visit. Foreign visitors should follow the Palace Museum's passport instructions and never rely on same-day entry.
- Allow
- 4–6 hours
- Booking
- Reservation required
- 02Dongcheng
Temple of Heaven
天坛Its ceremonial buildings and park landscape explain the cosmology and state rituals of the Ming and Qing courts.
The park gate and core monuments can use different tickets and hours. Check current passport booking instructions and closed days.
- Allow
- 2½–4 hours
- Booking
- Advance booking recommended
- 03Haidian
Summer Palace
颐和园A vast imperial garden of Kunming Lake, Longevity Hill, halls and long landscape sequences, not just one palace building.
It is far northwest of the central axis. Choose an entry gate and route before arrival, and verify which internal sights are open.
- Allow
- 4–6 hours
- Booking
- Advance booking recommended
- 04Huairou District
Mutianyu Great Wall
慕田峪长城Restored wall sections follow steep mountain ridges and provide a legible first Great Wall experience outside the urban core.
Mutianyu is about 70 kilometers from central Beijing. Plan transport, entry, ascent and descent together, and keep weather flexibility.
- Allow
- Full day including transfer

Arrive, eat and extend the stay.
Arrival nodes
- Beijing Capital International AirportPEKAirport · International gateway
The established international gateway northeast of central Beijing; airport transfer time belongs in the arrival-day plan.
- Beijing Daxing International AirportPKXAirport · International gateway
A major gateway south of the city with express-rail access; never assume PEK and PKX are interchangeable.
- Beijing South Railway Station北京南Rail station · Primary rail
Primary hub for Tianjin and Shanghai high-speed trains.
- Beijing Chaoyang Railway Station北京朝阳Rail station · Secondary rail
The key station for the fastest Chengde services; it is east of the historic center and needs a separate transfer.
Foods that belong here
- Peking duck 北京烤鸭
A shared meal built around crisp skin, sliced meat, pancakes and condiments; reserve at sought-after restaurants.
- Zhajiang noodles 炸酱面
Wheat noodles mixed with savory fermented-bean meat sauce and fresh vegetable toppings.
- Copper-pot lamb hot pot 铜锅涮肉
Thin lamb is quickly swished in a charcoal-heated pot and dipped in sesame sauce.
- Beijing breakfast snacks 北京早点
Explore sesame flatbreads, fried rings and tofu pudding; fermented mung-bean douzhi is notably sour and polarizing.
What to add without pretending everything is a day trip.
Tianjin
Former concession architecture, Haihe riverfronts and Tianjin snacks make a compact modern-history contrast.
Tianjin Station is most convenient for the river and Italian Style Area; the wrong Tianjin station can erase the rail-time advantage.Chengde
The Mountain Resort and outlying temples extend Qing imperial history into a landscape and multiethnic architectural setting.
Chengde South is outside the heritage core. Two nights is more credible than compressing the resort and temples into a rushed day trip.Reviewed connections from Beijing.

Beijing ↔ Shanghai
- Typical journey
- About 4 hours 20 minutes–6 hours on a direct high-speed train
- Station choice
- Beijing South–Shanghai Hongqiao is the standard high-speed pairing. Compare this central-to-hub journey with flights only after adding airport transfers and check-in time.
Both rail hubs have strong metro links, but they are large. Allow navigation, security and a buffer before departure, then add the hotel transfer at the destination.
Train categories and intermediate stops produce a wide duration range. Use Railway 12306 for current services and tickets.
Reviewed August 21, 2026 · not live availabilityBeijing ↔ Tianjin
- Typical journey
- About 30–40 minutes on a direct intercity train
- Station choice
- Beijing South–Tianjin Railway Station is usually best for central sightseeing. Tianjin West is useful on selected services but changes the last-mile calculation.
The rail segment is quick, but station access, pre-departure time and local travel at both ends make the real transfer substantially longer.
Frequent service does not guarantee a seat at the preferred time. Check the exact date and station on Railway 12306.

- Typical journey
- About 45–75 minutes on a direct high-speed train
- Station choice
- Beijing Chaoyang–Chengde South is the principal fast pairing. Both stations require a separate city transfer, especially Chengde South to the Mountain Resort area.
Chengde's headline train time can disguise the suburban stations and a large heritage area. An overnight stay is more realistic than stacking every temple into a rushed day trip.
Train availability and stopping pattern vary. Verify the exact service on Railway 12306 and check attraction entry rules separately.
