Shanghai 上海

China's sharpest contrast of historic treaty-port streets, contemporary skyline and everyday lane life.

Shanghai works best as an arrival city with three distinct layers: the Bund and old commercial core, the former French Concession's walkable neighborhoods, and Pudong's museums and skyline. It is also the simplest rail base for Suzhou and Hangzhou.

01 / Character

What Shanghai adds to a China trip.

Choose it for

  • first arrivals in China
  • architecture walks
  • museums
  • food and nightlife
  • easy regional rail trips

It may not suit you if

  • travelers seeking a quiet small-city stay
  • visitors who only want imperial monuments

City traits

  • international gateway
  • highly walkable by neighborhood
  • excellent metro
  • late-night energy
  • strong rainy-day options
02 / Signature experiences

Four places that explain Shanghai.

Use these as planning anchors, not as a checklist to rush through in one day.

  1. 01

    The Bund

    外滩
    Huangpu waterfront

Read Shanghai's commercial history in the historic riverfront facades, then look across to the modern Lujiazui skyline.

Walk north or south along the promenade and cross the river separately if you want a closer Pudong skyline view. Sunrise and late evening are calmer than sunset.

  2. 02

    Yuyuan Garden

    豫园
    Old City, Huangpu

A compact Ming-style Jiangnan garden that adds traditional spatial design to an otherwise modern-city visit.

The ticketed garden and the surrounding commercial bazaar are different experiences. Check the garden's current admission window before going at a peak time.

  3. 03

Wukang Road and the former French Concession

    武康路与衡复风貌区
    Xuhui

Tree-lined streets, protected residences and small-scale neighborhood life reveal a different Shanghai from the riverfront landmarks.

Treat this as a self-guided district walk, not a single photo stop. Side streets and signed heritage buildings are the substance of the visit.

  4. 04

    Shanghai Museum East

    上海博物馆东馆
    Pudong

Large permanent galleries give a structured introduction to ancient Chinese bronze, ceramics, sculpture and cross-cultural exchange.

It is in Pudong, not at the older People's Square building. Opening days, entry procedure and special-exhibition rules can change, so use the official guide before visiting.

03 / Practical shape

Arrive, eat and extend the stay.

Arrival nodes

  • Shanghai Pudong International AirportPVG
    Airport · International gateway

The main long-haul gateway. Budget separately for the transfer into central Shanghai rather than treating the airport as downtown.

  • Shanghai Hongqiao International AirportSHA
    Airport · Regional gateway

Best placed for domestic and regional arrivals that connect directly into the Hongqiao rail hub.

  • Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station上海虹桥
    Rail station · Primary rail

The default high-speed-rail hub for Hangzhou and many long-distance trains; Shanghai Railway Station can be more convenient for central hotels and Suzhou.

Foods that belong here

  • Soup dumplings 小笼包

Thin-skinned dumplings filled with hot broth; eat carefully and compare a classic shop with a neighborhood option.

  • Pan-fried buns 生煎馒头

Crisp-bottomed buns with a juicy filling, commonly eaten as an inexpensive breakfast or snack.

  • Scallion-oil noodles 葱油拌面

A simple local noodle dish whose flavor depends on slow-cooked scallion oil and soy.

  • Red-braised pork 本帮红烧肉

A representative sweet-savory Shanghai braise; best shared as part of a meal rather than ordered alone.

04 / Nearby extensions

What to add without pretending everything is a day trip.

Day trip

Suzhou

About 25–35 minutes on a suitable high-speed train, station to station.

Classical gardens and canals provide the clearest small-scale Jiangnan contrast to Shanghai.

An overnight stay produces a better experience; a day trip is realistic only when station transfers and one or two priority sights are planned.
Overnight

Hangzhou

About 45–80 minutes by high-speed rail, depending on the station pair and stopping pattern.

West Lake, tea country and Buddhist heritage add landscape and slower outdoor time.

A day trip is possible but compresses the lake and western-hills sights; two nights is the more useful default.

High speed rail or intercity rail

ShanghaiSuzhou

Typical journey
About 25–35 minutes on a direct fast train
Station choice
Shanghai Hongqiao has the widest fast-train choice, while Shanghai Railway Station can be more convenient from the central city. In Suzhou, distinguish central Suzhou Railway Station from suburban Suzhou North.

A short train ride is not a 30-minute hotel-to-hotel transfer. Budget for metro or taxi time at both ends, security and finding the correct station.

This is a planning range, not a live schedule. Search the exact date and station pair on Railway 12306 before booking.

High speed rail

ShanghaiHangzhou

Typical journey
About 45–80 minutes on a direct high-speed train
Station choice
Shanghai Hongqiao–Hangzhou East is the default high-frequency pairing. Hangzhou West and other station pairs may suit a particular itinerary but can add urban transfer time.

Hangzhou East is well connected but not beside West Lake. Add local travel at both ends and station procedures when comparing a day trip with an overnight stay.

This broad range covers common direct services, not every train. Confirm the operating day, station and duration on Railway 12306.

High speed rail

ShanghaiBeijing

Typical journey
About 4 hours 20 minutes–6 hours on a direct high-speed train
Station choice
Beijing South–Shanghai Hongqiao is the standard high-speed pairing. Compare this central-to-hub journey with flights only after adding airport transfers and check-in time.

Both rail hubs have strong metro links, but they are large. Allow navigation, security and a buffer before departure, then add the hotel transfer at the destination.

Train categories and intermediate stops produce a wide duration range. Use Railway 12306 for current services and tickets.

High speed rail

ShanghaiGuangzhou

Typical journey
About 6 hours 55 minutes–8 hours on a direct high-speed train
Station choice
Shanghai Hongqiao–Guangzhou South is the usual direct high-speed pairing. Selected services may use Guangzhou East; always compare the last-mile trip before choosing.

This is a full travel day despite being city-to-city rail. Keep the arrival evening light and account for large-station navigation at both ends.

The duration range reflects direct fast trains described by official city sources. Search Railway 12306 for the exact operating day and stations.
